Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a treatment that can be applied to baby teeth that have cavities but cannot be treated with a restoration due to your child’s behavior, medical condition, or other factors. The SDF stops the growth of the cavity until treatment can be provided in the future. Because of its chemical properties, SDF turns the cavity visibly black when it is applied to the tooth. This color cannot be removed unless a restoration is done in the future. Although it’s not visually pleasing, the color is a more favorable option than the decay progressing.
